Are you working during pregnancy? Here are Some Valuable Tips!

The statistics are in, and more moms-to-be are working through your pregnancy–and into your eight h month–than ever before. Bottom line, you need to listen to your body, take breaks and eat right. Here are some more great tips from the Mayo Clinic:

TO EASE NAUSEA AND VOMITING:

• Avoid nausea triggers. Stay away from the cafeteria or the break room to steer clear of smells that trigger your nausea
• Snack often. Keep a stash of healthy snacks in a drawer at work. Include crackers for nausea.
• Drink lots of fluids. Sip on a water bottle throughout the day.
• Slow down in the morning. Get ready for work a little earlier, because rushing can cause nausea.
• Get plenty of sleep. You’ll feel better and will be less likely to become nauseated.

TO HANDLE FATIGUE:

• Take short, frequent breaks. Get up. Move around. Put your feet up and close your eyes for a few moments. You’ll need your strength for the baby shower your co-workers are throwing for you!
• Reschedule your day if necessary. Pay attention to your energy levels and try to work when you’re not exhausted.
• Scale back on outside activities. Let someone else do the shopping or mow the lawn.
• Keep exercising. Take a walk. Join a prenatal fitness class.
• Hit the sack early. If you’re tired at 7PM, turn out the lights and let your head hit the pillow.

TO STAY COMFORTABLE:

• Sitting. Good lower back support is crucial. An adjustable chair is best, but if you don’t have one, use a pillow for your back and elevate your feet on a footrest.
• Standing. If you must stand for long periods of time (which may lead to pain, dizziness and pressure on your back,) put one of your feet up on a footrest, low stool or box, and switch feet every so often. Take frequent breaks, and wear comfortable shoes. Support hose can help, too.
• Bending and Lifting. Bend at the knees. Keep the load close to your body and lift with your legs–not your back. Ask for help with heavy loads–like all the baby shower gifts you receive from your co-workers!

TO CONTROL STRESS:

• Stay in control. Make a to-do list and delegate, delegate, delegate.
• Stay positive. Laugh at life, and avoid negative people.
• Talk about it. Don’t keep your frustrations inside. Talk to friends, family or your spouse.
• Let it go. If you can’t change a situation, forget about it.
• Relax. Slow breathing. Yoga. Meditation.

TAKE PROPER PRECAUTIONS! Long commutes, excessive heat, prolonged standing, heavy lifting, heavy vibrations and exposure to harmful substances increase your risk of complications during pregnancy. If your job puts you in these situations, talk to your health care provider and decide together what, if any, modifications to your work duties might be necessary.

5 Things to pack in your hospital bag...

An expecting mother recently asked me: “Do you really have to bring everything pregnancy checklists recommend?” No way. But here are five things experienced moms say you should take to the hospital for childbirth:

1. Paperwork: Insurance cards, hospital documents, identification and your checkbook.

2. Comfy clothes: A robe, slippers that slide on, over sized pajama pants and tops that button down the front.

3. Maternity underwear: Yes, the hospital will provide you with some cheapy, creepy ones, but you’ll be more comfortable in your own. Think cotton and don’t bring anything fancy — they will likely get ruined.

4. An installed carseat: The hospital won’t let you leave without one.

5. Baby’s going home outfit: Soft cotton is always best. Save the frills for later.

January Is Birth Defects Awareness Month: Celebrate By Preventing Them

It’s a shame when a life so precious ends too soon. What’s the leading cause? Birth defects. Unfortunately, about 120,000 babies are born with some type of abnormality each year, which has made it the leading cause of death in the first year of life. It goes without saying that we need to do everything we can to keep these precious little ones alive and healthy. Since January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, I thought it would be helpful to share a few ways you can prevent birth defects.

Keep yourself healthy from the start

If you’re planning to have children, schedule an appointment with your doctor to assess your risk factors. If there are any, like high blood pressure or diabetes, address them immediately. Sure, you may have to stop smoking or make some other lifestyle changes, but the healthier you are during preconception, the healthier your baby will be.

Take one for the baby

While most women start prenatal vitamins when they first realize that they are expecting, it’s also a great idea to begin taking a multivitamin before you get pregnant. Because the baby’s neural tube begins developing early, damage could be done even before you realize you’re pregnant. So be sure to include a multivitamin that’s rich in B-vitamin folic acid (at least 400 micrograms) to help the baby’s brain and the spinal cord develop normally.

Taking care of baby after delivery

Taking these precautions can help make sure that your baby develops normally while inside the womb and is ready to greet the great big world outside. After making his grand entrance, you can keep baby safe and warm with a cozy layette set–especially one that’s fresh from the farm. He’ll be as cozy as a pig in a blanket while wearing the animal-themed baby clothes in this unique baby gift. Then you can lull him off to sleep for a good night’s rest–or at least until the next mealtime.

Our Triplets Are 10 Months!

Where does the time fly???? Well have a set of triplets and a singleton and you will see how fast time flies.... I can not believe they are 10 months old already. It is amazing to me to look back to when they were first born and to see them today! They are an inspiration and a true blessing.

Teagan - Baby A. She led the pack into this world and to this day she still does... She crawls all over her siblings, if she wants a toy she takes it! She is definitely the"thinker" of the group. Teagan is always looking at people and examining them. She is very curious and tries to read their minds. She loves to laugh.

Then 3 lbs 2 oz and Now 17 lbs

Stephanie - Baby B. She is our little "princess" - well actually she is the "Diva". She has the cutest dimples and she uses them to her advantage. When she falls on her "tush" she looks around and if she sees you she cries until she is picked up. She has her mom wrapped around her finger (don't tell the others)! She enjoys wearing frilly dresses to church and loves to look at herself in the mirror.

Then 2 lbs 13 oz and Now 16 lbs 13 oz

Luke - Baby C. My BOY!! The one I wanted and got two extra gifts (I always say that). He's a sweetie and loves to snuggle. Our little "Couch Potato" can't get enough of YO GABBA GABBA. He said "ma ma" already! You GO Lukey! He has a little alfalfa going on with his hair (thanks to his dad) and he steals your heart when he smiles and wrinkles his nose.

Katelyn - She has passed her "princess" title onto her sister and tells me now that she is the "Queen". But we know who the real queen is... the one that birthed these 4 kiddos. She is a terrific BIG sister and helps us out whenever we need her. She enjoys playing with them (Teagan is her favorite) and loves to rock them to sleep. The triplets just love her because she has such a great sense of humor and makes them crack up all the time. Of course she does this when they're sitting at their table trying to eat!
